Sixteen samples, each played by keys of its own: a drum kit, or a melodic instrument sampled across the keyboard. Every pad has a range of keys and a root key, and either plays its sample as recorded on every key of the range, as a drum does, or moves its pitch with the keys. Each pad is tuned up to three octaves either way, has its own level and pan, plays to the end of its sample or stops with its key, counts how hard a note is struck as much or as little as you say, and can be played backwards or upside down. Pads in the same choke group cut each other off, as a closed hi-hat stops an open one. A pad with no sample in it is silent. Every pad has an output of its own beside the mix of all sixteen, so each can be sent through its own effects.
